Sinopsis

New challenges in dementias emerge with greater rigor as the years go by. Thanks to longer life expectancy, people are more prone to this condition. A key point is the imperative need to develop new and better treatments for the population, which are advancing at a slower pace than the number of people with dementia, so greater efforts are needed to include these patients in clinical trials to meet this goal. However, we must visualize the bioethical complexity that this implies by the socioeconomic and cognitive conditions of each individual and that, historically, there are many examples of how they can be violated, so that today requires us to adjust the paradigm in order to grow the science without neglecting respect for the rights and autonomy of these patients. This work seeks to disseminate historical facts, bioethical dilemmas in medical research of dementias and future prospects in this field, considering the expectations and wishes of patients as a current approach to be added to the current treatment.
