Sinopsis

Nobody had more influence on Anglophone military thought over the last 100 years than Sir Basil Liddell Hart (1895-1970). He published at least 35 books, in 42 countries and 31 languages. He directly advised ministers and flag officers. He opined on everything from politics to femininity. Previous biographers relied on what he said late in life. This biography gives a fresh and objective insight into his life, thought, and legacy, using archives that previous biographers never consulted. Major parts of his life are biographed here for the first time, such as his advocacy for hit-and-run raids by light tanks and heavy bombers (which he later reinvented as Blitzkrieg), his influence on academia, his sympathies for fascism, his pre-war appeasement, his wartime defeatism, and his Cold War push for 'good manners' in place of nuclear deterrence. This book reveals a more nuanced person and legacy than previously presented, and helps us to carry forward his positive contributions without the negative.
