Sinopsis

Nobody, will blame me for placing hereáthe touching history of these Martyrs. Itáillustrates the period of history we are nowáconsidering, and sheds light on the precedingátreatise. I can hardly read it without tears, and itáought to make us love &ldquo, the noble army ofámartyrs.&rdquo, I think Tertullian was the editor of theástory, not its author. Felicitas is mentioned byáname in the De Anima: and the closingáparagraph of this memoir is quite in his style. Toáthese words I need only add that Dr. Routh, whoáunfortunately decided not to re-edit it, ascribesáthe first edition to Lucas Holstenius.Perpetua and Felicitas sufferedámartyrdom in the reign of Septimius Severus,áabout the year 202 A.D. Tertullian mentionsáPerpetua, and a further clue to the date is givenáin the allusion to the birthday of &ldquo,Geta theáCæsar,&rdquo, the son of Septimius Severus. There isátherefore, good reason for rejecting the opinionáheld by some, that they suffered under Valerianáand Gallienus. Some think that they suffered atáTuburbium in Mauritania, but the more generaláopinion is, that Carthage was the scene of theirámartyrdom.
